Variety books provide a support and an extension of reading skills acquired from reading Duck Green School Stories. They are divided into consolidation stories and extension stories. They cover a wide range of genres, authors and writing styles. The Stage 2 Consolidation cluster (‘Bear Tales’ by Celia Warren and Alison Hawes) consists of 3 amusing stories about Big Bear and his friends, illustrated by John Blackman. These stories consolidate the vocabulary learned in the Stage 2 Duck Green Stories. The Stage 2 Extension cluster (‘Tig Stories’ by Paul Shipton) consists of 3 stories about a friendly monster’s first experiences of school, illustrated by Clive Scruton. These stories extend vocabulary from Stage 2. The books are available in both standard and `big book’ format.
