A stuck-fast turnip stands in the way of Mr. Wolf and a bowl of turnip stew. In his latest adventure, Mr. Wolf makes a bargain with a frog prince-help in finding a princess to break the spell in return for help in pulling up the turnip. Vain and lazy, the first two princesses refuse. But the kiss of the third princess (a grease monkey) does the trick. Handsome and splendidly dressed, the prince reneges on his promise, steals the car and picks up the other two princesses. Not to be snubbed like this, Mr. Wolf decides on the only decent course of action-he feasts on the three. Then, the princess, Mr. Wolf and all the royal animals who have helped along the way pitch in to pull the turnip and share the stew. Young readers will delight in the details found in Fearnley’s watercolors, especially the uproarious ‘Mr. Wolf’s Guide to Royal Etiquette’ found on the endpapers. A sure antidote to the traditional fairy tale. (Picture book. 3-8)
