Katie Morag’s two very different grandmothers, plain Grannie Island and sophisticated Grandma Mainland, don’t seem to like each other, until Granma Mainland’s secret beauty formula saves the day for Grannie Island’s prize sheep.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2 Katie Morag’s grandmothers are as different as night and day. Granma Mainland, visiting the island from the big city, is a “smart wee dazzler”petite, feminine and always impeccably dressed. Grannie Island, on the other hand, lives just across the bay and has no time for such fancy ways. Clad in her boots and overalls, she is always busy tending her farm and animals. When on the morning of the big annual Show Day, Grannie Island’s prize-winning ewe, Alecina, gets filthy, it’s Katie Morag who saves the day by remembering Granma Mainland’s ample collection of “beauty aids.” After a bubble bath, and having her fleece perfumed, powdered and curled, Alecina is, of course, judged the hands-down trophy winner. The busy watercolor and crayon illustrations add enormously to the success of this lighthearted story and present a charming picture of life in the Hebrides. An excellent read-aloud choice.
