Bhí Éamon de Valera – ‘Dev’ – ar dhuine de na daoine a bhunaigh agus a mhúnlaigh Éire na linne seo. Bhí tionchar an-mhór ag an mbaint a bhí aige le hÉirí Amach na Cásca, le Cogadh na Saoirse agus leis an gCogagh Carthartha ar chinniúint an náisiúin.
B’eisean an t-aon duine riamh a bhí ina Thaoiseach agus ina Uachtarán; bhí sé freagrach as cur le chéile Bhunreacht na hÉireann. Chinntigh sé gur fhan an Saorstát neodrach le linn an Dara Coghadh Domhanda.
Cé go raibh ardmheas ag roinnt daoine air, chain daoine eile é mar gheall ar chinntí a rinné sé agus cinntí a dhiúltaigh sé a dhéanamh.
Is scéal é seo faoi pholaiteoir ceannródaíoch nár éirigh leis an dá thrá a thabhairt leis.
Éamon de Valera – “Dev” – was one of the founding fathers of the Ireland we know today. His involvement in the Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War had a huge impact on the fate of the nation. He is the only person that become both Taoiseach and President and was responsible for the creation of the Irish Constitution. Admired by some, he was criticised by others for decisions he took and decisions he refused to take. This is the story of a leader who cast a long shadow on Irish politics and still divides opinion today.
