Fudge and her sister Sarah go to a yard sale to find a gift for their dad’s birthday, and Fudge finds a small blue box with a note about a genie inside of it. She eventually follows the instructions on the note to tap out the word ‘genie’ in Morse code. A genie appears, ready to grant her wishes. The genie is accustomed to royalty and castles, so when he grants her wishes, they aren’t what she expects them to be. When she asks him to write her history report, he writes it in Arabic. When she wants a more interesting pet, he gives her an elephant. After more misadventures that involve her sister being temporarily whisked away to the desert, she realizes that the genie is too much trouble. Written in eight chapters, the story moves along with a sense of humor and surprise events. The black and white illustrations add to the humor, with the genie looking appropriately cute and mischievous. This is a good story for readers who are beginning to read chapter books, and it’s bound to keep them turning the pages. Pages at the end of the text include discussion questions, writing prompts, and Internet sites.
